Fintech companies providing payments, digital financial services, and non-bank consumer lending reported a completely smooth start, offering automatic and free currency conversion for millions of users. The Bulgarian fintech sector demonstrated a high level of technological maturity, operational resilience, and coordination during the country’s transition to the euro on January 1, 2026.

In the first minutes after midnight on January 1, the first euro transactions were successfully completed – including online card payments at 00:11, the first ATM deposit with automatic conversion at 00:25, ATM withdrawals at 00:28, and the first successful internal transfer between fintech payment accounts at 00:30 – all executed without technical issues and with full system functionality.

The successful introduction of the euro in the first hours and days of the year clearly showed that Bulgaria’s fintech sector is an integral part of the country’s critical financial infrastructure. Companies in the sector proved they can operate in full coordination with banks, regulators, and national operators, providing reliable, secure, and user-oriented solutions at key moments for the economy.

The transition to the euro reinforces the role of the fintech ecosystem as a driver of innovation, financial accessibility, and digital transformation, creating a solid foundation for further development, investment, and Bulgaria’s integration into the European single financial market.
